Signs of the times

Yesterday, January 5th, Rene' was late coming home from work. There was a complete shut down of interstate 65 at Rosa Parks Blvd. I thought that there had been another wreck on the interstate, which seems to be a daily event, but it turned out to be something different. As I watched the news, I saw that a 46 year old man had climbed atop the sign over the interstate. He was threatening to jump to his death.

I feel compassion for the man, who's name is WIlliam, and who is homeless. I realize that it takes a sense of hopelessness to get to a point in your life where you do something as drastic as this. The police and the fire department were called and they decided to shut down the interstate and try to talk the man down. Finally they were successful in doing so.

I see an irony in this situatiion. The hopeless man on a sign reminds me of the Scriptures which point to the signs of the end times, a time of hopelessness. The disciples asked Jesus, "What will be the sign of your coming, and the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:3) Jesus goes on to paint a picture of a world that is hopeless. Friends, this describes our world today.

No one knows the time of Christ's return, but the signs are all around us. We live in a world that is full of hopeless people. The good news is that we know the savior who brings hope to all who will make Him there Lord and Master. Jesus Christ is the blessed hope. Let us cling to our hope and share the Good News, the Gospel, to a lost and hopeless world.

God bless you, Bro. Freddy
