Focus on the fundamentals

I recently heard an interseting interview with Nick Saban. He is the coach of the Alabama University football team, which is scheduled to play in the national championship game against Clemson University. He was asked if the team was excited about reaching the championship game and he responded that they were, but they have a team approach to the game which focuses on the basics, or the fundamentals of the game of football. He is usrging his players to focus on blocking, making each tackle, catching each pass, and successfully carrying out each play.

As I heard Coach Saban's response I was reminded of how we as Christians are called to follow the example of an athlete. 1 Corinthians 9:24 " Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it." To win our race we need to focus on the fundamentals of the Christian life. As we begin this new year let me encourage you to do these daily.

1. Pray!

2. Read the Bible!

3. Be faithful to attend worship services!

4. Be a part of a Sunday School class! ( East Hickman Baptist has terrific teachers)

5. Share you faith!
