In Sunday School last week we studied the story of the twelve spies who searched out the promise land and came back to report to all the people. Two spies gave a positive report and urged the people to obey God and enter the promised land. Ten of the spies gave a negative report and caused the people to fear and desire to return to Egypt.
As we studied these verses in Numbers 13, i remembered a sermon that Bro. Steve Weaver preached at Westwood Baptist Church nearly thirty years ago. The title of the message was"Grasshopper Complex". This was one of those life changing sermons. It was planted deep in my heart and has changed the way I have looked at the world since then.
The main point of the sermon was that we must keep our eyes on God. When we take our eyes off of God and begin to look at the challenges of life, and try to overcome them in our own power, we will quickly loose heart. In Numbers 13:33 the ten spies said, 'There we saw the giants and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." This is what always happens when we take our eyes off of God. We see the challenges of life and feel weak and powerless. We see the enemies in our life and feel like they are going to swallow us up. We see the circumstances of life and feel like there is no hope. We feel like grasshoppers! Small, weak, and afraid. Always running away and trying to hide. Never claiming the victory that God has for us in Jesus Christ.
Keep your eyes on God. He is able. When we keep our eyes on God, then our challenges in life will begin to appear small in comparison to our mighty God. The Bible says that we are more than conquerers in Christ Jesus. Do you believe that it is true? The last thirty years of my life have shown me that I can rely upon God and that I can enter the promise land that God has given to me.
God bless you.
